1 Nephi 1:1

I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents,

therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father;

and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days,

nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days;

yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God,

therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days.

1 Nephi 1:14

And it came to pass that when my father had read

and seen many great and marvelous things,

he did exclaim many things unto the Lord; such as:

Great and marvelous are thy works, O Lord God Almighty!

Thy throne is high in the heavens,

and thy power, and goodness, and mercy are over all the inhabitants of the earth;

and, because thou art merciful,

thou wilt not suffer those who come unto thee that they shall perish!

1 Nephi 2:16

And it came to pass that I, Nephi, being exceedingly young,

nevertheless being large in stature,

and also having great desires to know of the mysteries of God,

wherefore, I did cry unto the Lord;

and behold he did visit me, and did soften my heart

that I did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father;

wherefore, I did not rebel against him like unto my brothers.

1 Nephi 3:20

And also that we may preserve unto them the words

which have been spoken by the mouth of all the holy prophets,

which have been delivered unto them by the Spirit and power of God,

since the world began, even down unto this present time.

1 Nephi 4:1

And it came to pass that I spake unto my brethren, saying:

Let us go up again unto Jerusalem,

and let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord;

for behold he is mightier than all the earth,

then why not mightier than Laban and his fifty,

yea, or even than his tens of thousands?
